Symptoms of Delirium

Delirium often occurs in people with dementia.  Be aware of some differences between symptoms. 
Symptoms and signs of delirium include reduced awareness of one’s environment, cognitive impairment and behavior changes. Dementia and delirium may be difficult to distinguish. The onset of delirium occurs in a short time, dementia usually begins with minor symptoms that gradually worsen over time. A person with significantly impaired delirium has an inability to stay focused or maintain attention. A person in early stages of dementia remains generally alert. Delirium symptoms can fluctuate significantly and often throughout the day. People with dementia have better and worse times of day.  Their memory and thinking skills stay at a fairly stable level throughout the day.
