The Difference Between Hoarding and Collecting

In general, collectors have a sense of pride about their possessions. They enjoy displaying and talking about them. They feel satisfied when adding to it and budget their time and money.
Collectors deliberately search out specific items such as stamps, salt & pepper shakers, quilts, holiday decorations or dolls. Collections are generally organized. Although they may be large, items aren’t usually cluttered or cause distress that are part of hoarding disorder. Those who hoard feel uncomfortable when others see items they hoard and the extreme clutter. They may feel sad, distressed and feel overwhelmed. Hoarders are often in debt.
